GYCC Speed League Round 4 Race Report
Round 4 of the Speed League brought something different to Herringfleet, with almost the entire field shelving their TT bikes and taking on the course aboard road bikes. Despite another windy evening, 20 riders produced an impressive collection of fast times, personal bests and new Average Speed Levels.
Matt Holland recorded the fastest speed of the night, winning the TT category with an excellent 26.67mph average. Mark Richards followed at 25.96mph, while Adam Glover improved his personal best to 22.64mph and reached the Gold Average Speed Level.
Jason Yaxley produced an outstanding performance to win the Club category, averaging 25.67mph and earning Titanium. Liam Walpole continued his impressive start to the series by improving to 23.44mph, reaching Platinum and taking another victory in the Novice category.
It was also brilliant to welcome four riders from Rock Estate. Joe Drake, Kyle Garrett and Lee Cook all reached the Platinum Average Speed Level, recording 23.42mph, 23.36mph and 23.14mph respectively. Paul Wright completed a strong showing from the group with 22.33mph and Gold.
Nine returning riders improved their personal bests during the evening. Alongside Liam, Lee and Adam, Tom Moore, Paul Hayward and Stephen Brown all produced significant improvements to reach Silver. Ashton Moore, Gavin Stock and Ian Armstrong also set new personal bests.
The latest results have made the battle at the top of the league even closer. Mark Richards leads with 123 points, but Gavin Stock is now only one point behind on 122. Adam Glover has moved into third with 110, while Jordan McWilton, Tom Moore and Stephen Brown are tied on 108 points.
Round 5 takes place in two weeks and will have a special female focus, delivered in collaboration with Hashtag Coaching and the Her Time Project. The aim is to help break down some of the barriers to entering the sport and create a welcoming opportunity for more female riders to experience riding against the clock.
As always, the round remains open to riders of all genders and abilities, so our regular male riders are still encouraged to take part as usual. The female focus is about helping more women feel confident joining the sport, while maintaining the inclusive atmosphere that has shaped the Speed League from the beginning.
With the evenings beginning to draw in, Round 5 will start 15 minutes earlier. Sign-on will be open from 6pm until 6:30pm, with the first rider setting off at 6:45pm.
