Records Fall in a Thrilling Speed League Finale
Round 6 brought the 2026 GYCC Speed League to an incredibly close and exciting conclusion.
We welcomed 25 riders for the final round, including six riders making their league debuts. Their involvement means riders from 12 local cycling clubs have now taken part in the league, demonstrating the fantastic support the series has received from across the local cycling community.
It was a dull and overcast evening, with rain threatening throughout. Thankfully, other than a few isolated spits, it held off and the conditions produced an exceptionally fast night of racing.
Across the field, riders achieved an impressive 20 personal bests and 10 new average speed levels.
New Course Records
At the front of the field, Mark Richards recorded the highest average speed of the evening at 28.63mph, improving upon his own men’s course record from an earlier round.
Abi Bremmer also raised her own women’s course record, recording an average speed of 21.83mph.
Both riders delivered their best performances when it mattered most, on a night when the league titles were on the line.
League Titles Decided on the Night
Seven riders arrived at the final round still mathematically capable of claiming the overall league title or one of the closely contested category titles. With everything resting on their individual performances, five of the seven contenders produced new personal bests.
However, none were able to progress to a new average speed level, leaving the final standings incredibly close once the points and dropped scores had been calculated.
Mark Richards secured the overall league victory and the Men’s TT category title, while Abi Bremmer claimed the Women’s TT title.
The Men’s Club, Men’s Novice and Women’s Club competitions could not be separated on points and all had to be decided using the league’s countback rules. With Stephen Brown & Liam Walpole winning the men’s Club & Novice categories respectively and Kerstin Schankat & Rachel Finch taking the women’s Club & Novice categories.
Long-Awaited Average Speed Awards
Among the evening’s 10 new average speed achievements were two particularly special performances.
Ashton Moore earned his Silver average speed award, having chased the level throughout the entire league, while Ron Bean finally secured his Steel award after coming agonisingly close on several occasions this season.
Congratulations to Ashton, Ron and every rider who achieved a new level or personal best during the final round.
