GYCC Speed League Round 2 Race Report
Round 2 of the Speed League delivered another strong night of racing, with 11 riders taking on the course in windy conditions. The wind was still a major factor, but its more favourable direction compared with the opening round helped produce a much quicker set of times.
Two new riders joined the league and both made an immediate impact. Matt Holland produced an excellent 27.55mph average in the TT category, earning the Carbon speed level and finishing second fastest overall. Jo Browne also impressed on her debut, averaging 18.85mph to reach the Bronze level in the Novice category.
Mark Richards once again set the fastest speed of the night, recording 28.14mph and reaching the Graphene level. Toby Barnes followed with 26.47mph, improving by an impressive 1.38mph from Round 1 and reaching Kevlar.
Jordan McWilton led the Club category with 22.56mph, moving up to the Gold level, while Gavin Stock topped the Novice category with 20.43mph and Bronze. Adam Glover, Tom Moore, Stephen Brown and Ian Armstrong all recorded personal best performances, with eight of the nine returning riders improving their speed from the opening round.
Those faster performances have created an interesting challenge ahead of Round 3. With riders now setting higher benchmarks, further improvements will become harder to achieve, making every personal best, target level and category position increasingly important.
At the top of the league, Mark Richards and Gavin Stock are tied on 80 points. Jordan McWilton is close behind on 78, with Toby Barnes still firmly in contention on 74. With individual performances having such a major impact on the scoring, Round 3 could begin to shake up the order and introduce some new names at the top of the table.
