…And Why TPR Events Is Supporting the New Great Yarmouth Cycling Club (GYCC Speed League
Across the UK, grassroots cycling is facing a challenge.
Many local clubs are finding it harder than ever to attract new riders, fill events and keep traditional forms of racing alive. Participation numbers have fallen in some areas, volunteer numbers are under pressure, and for many cyclists, racing can feel intimidating or inaccessible.
At TPR Events, we believe local cycling clubs are one of the most important parts of our sport. They provide opportunities for riders to challenge themselves, develop confidence, make friends and become part of a community. Many of today’s experienced cyclists took their first steps into organised cycling through a local club event.
That is why we’re proud to be supporting the new GYCC Speed League.
Why Local Racing Matters
Grassroots racing isn’t just about competition. It’s where riders learn new skills, discover what they’re capable of and build confidence in a supportive environment.
Local events create opportunities for people to push themselves, set personal goals and become part of something bigger than simply riding a bike. They also help keep cycling communities thriving by bringing together riders, volunteers, supporters and local businesses.
Without local clubs and local events, the pathway into competitive cycling becomes much harder.
The Challenge
Traditional forms of racing can sometimes feel intimidating, especially for riders who have never raced before. For many people, the thought of entering a race, riding specialist equipment or competing against experienced riders can be enough to stop them giving it a try.
We recognised this challenge and with the help of GYCC and local partners we wanted to create something different. Something that welcomed newcomers while still providing a fun and rewarding experience for more experienced riders.
Introducing the GYCC Speed League
The new GYCC Speed League has been designed with accessibility and progression at its core.
The league introduces a fresh approach to local time trialling and club competition, helping remove some of the barriers that can put people off getting involved.
Key features include:
- Road bikes are welcomed & encouraged
- Dedicated novice category
- Friendly and supportive atmosphere
- Community-focused approach
- Progression and improvement rewarded
- A format that encourages riders to race against themselves as much as others
The aim is simple: create an environment where riders of all abilities feel comfortable taking part and improving week after week.
Why TPR Events Is Supporting The Project
At TPR Events, our goal has always been about more than organising cycling events. We care deeply about the long-term future of cycling in our region.
Supporting initiatives like the GYCC Speed League helps create opportunities for new riders to get involved, strengthens local clubs and helps build a healthier cycling community for future generations.
Many of the values behind the Speed League mirror the values we try to build into our own events:
- Welcoming and inclusive participation
- Community spirit
- Personal achievement
- Supporting riders at every level
- Creating memorable experiences
The stronger our local clubs become, the stronger cycling becomes for everyone.
Community Supported
One of the most encouraging aspects of the Speed League is the support it has received from local businesses and members of the cycling community. The league has been brought together by passionate people who want to give something back to grassroots cycling. We are proud to be supported by local businesses Mark (Titch) of Echelon Cycleworks & Nick of Hashtag Coaching, both of which are prominent figures in the local time trialing scene too.
Importantly, funds raised through the league are reinvested back into Great Yarmouth Cycling Club and grassroots cycling initiatives, helping ensure local opportunities continue to exist for years to come.
Looking Ahead
The future of cycling doesn’t begin at professional races. It begins on local roads, at local clubs and through the people who give their time to help others discover the sport.
Projects like the GYCC Speed League play a vital role in creating those opportunities. We’re excited to see the league develop, support the riders taking part and help encourage the next generation of cyclists to take their first steps into local racing.
Because when grassroots cycling thrives, everyone benefits.
